Oral Health

Good oral health is vital to maintaining overall health. Iowa PCA works with Dental Directors and other health center oral health staff to integrate dental clinical and administrative functions at dental clinics in Iowa. Delta Dental of Iowa, provided seed funding to the Iowa PCA to establish an Oral Health Program Manager. The Oral Health Manger oversees clinical quality efforts and serve as an “ambassador” in the broader community by raising awareness of CHC oral health programs. Iowa PCA Member CEOs and dental directors will participate in and guide the priorities and work of the Oral Health Manager. The Oral Health Manager will also work to solidify key partnerships in the public health and oral health environments.

The Iowa PCA participated in the Strengthen the Oral Health Safety Net Initiative sponsored by the DentaQuest Foundation. The goal of this initiative was to evaluate the importance of oral health within the Iowa Primary Care Association’s leadership and the executive leadership within the Iowa community health centers.

In 2017 the Iowa PCA will transition into the National Oral Health Integration and Innovation Network (NOHIIN). This network of Primary Care Associations (PCAs) will continue to work to elevate the importance of oral health to overall health. This network has recruited all but 13 Primary Care Associations. In 2017 they will work to grow the network to include these PCAs. Another top goal of NOHIIN is to integrate oral health care into the practice of medical providers utilizing the Qualis Oral Health Integration Implementation Guide. For information on this guide:

To advance the leadership skills of Iowa PCA dental directors who are new to their position and have been accepted to participate in the National Oral Health Institute (NOHLI) sponsored by the National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA), the Iowa PCA has secured funds from Delta Dental of Iowa Foundations to support travel cost associated with the participation in NOHLI. Delta Dental Foundation also provided travel funds to support the executive leadership from the dental director’s center to attend NNOHA Conferences. The Iowa PCA will continue to work with the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation to support this educational/ leadership opportunity for new dental directors.

Iowa PCA Oral Health Program Best Practice Toolkit

Developed in partnership between the Iowa PCA's Oral Health Manager, Iowa Medicaid Enterprise and the Oral Health Committee, the Iowa PCA Oral Health Best Practice toolkit is a valuable guide for health centers as they continue to work on improving documentation of services provided to patients as well as changes to what is considered standard of care.

The toolkit is aimed to:

  1. Become an orientation tool for new providers.
  2. Aid the centers’ documentation in patient records
  3. Facilitate a better understanding of medical necessity
  4. Assist centers in developing a plan to monitor and improve clinical documentation through peer review, chart audits, and the development of a compliance program.

We can schedule time to review the toolkit with your staff. We will come to your center or we can schedule a webinar. Please work with the Oral Health Manager, Nancy Adrianse, to arrange this training. Her contact information is: 515-333-5032 or
