Pharmacy is one of the most challenging aspects in the community health center environment. CHC staff work to secure the most affordable price for patient medications through medication assistance programs, local or chain discounts (Wal-Mart and others), and through maximizing the 340B Pharmacy program. Iowa PCA has worked for several years on efforts to provide educational opportunities for members to better understand these programs and engaged consultants to help us think about creative solutions to address the high cost of managing the pharmacy program. A pharmacy work group periodically convenes to address these issues.

The Patient Safety and Clinical Pharmacy Services (PSPC) – PSPC is a national initiative comprised of a rapidly growing number of regional multi-disciplinary, inter-collaborative teams. Their mission is to be, “Committed to saving and enhancing thousands of lives per year by achieving optimal health outcomes and eliminating adverse drug events through increased clinical pharmacy services for the patients we serve.” Iowa PCA's team, “IA/NEPCares”, is comprised of Iowa PCA, the Siouxland Community Health Center (lead), the River Hills Community Health Center, and the Iowa Prescription Drug Corporation. The national PSPC efforts have seen statistically solid results in decreasing medication errors and increasing patient compliance.

The Iowa Prescription Drug Corporation (IPDC) – The IPDC is a key partner with Iowa PCA. Through work related to the Iowa Collaborative Safety Net Provider Network, the IPDC provides technical assistance to our member pharmacy programs. The IPDC has developed tools to facilitate understanding of the 340B Drug and Prime Vendor Programs, among others, to help members maximize those available programs and services such as the Essentials for 340B Pharmacy Management. Pharmacists at the IPDC are also available to respond to individual questions and requests from health centers.
